Backend Developer
We are looking for backend developers to join a small squad working on a real-time client platform. You will own services end to end — schema, API, deployment and the pager — with review and support rather than supervision.
What you will do
- Design, build and operate backend services and APIs
- Model data properly: schema design, indexing and query optimisation
- Write tests that would have caught the last production bug
- Review colleagues' pull requests thoughtfully and promptly
- Take part in incident response and write the follow-up honestly
What we need from you
- Strong programming ability in Node.js, Python, Java or Ruby
- Practical experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL or MongoDB — design, query and optimise
- Understanding of REST API design, authentication and authorisation
- Comfortable with Git-based workflows and code review
- Able to explain a technical decision to a non-engineer
Nice to have
Genuinely optional. We have hired people who had none of these.
- Docker and a CI/CD pipeline you have maintained
- Message queues or event-driven architecture
- Performance profiling and caching strategy
- Open-source contributions of any size
